Day 4: Return to Karen Hospital

Today, we went back for a second day at The Karen Hospital, this time to do more formal interviews and talk with more new people.

We talked a lot with Loreen Kaimenyi, the public health relations offer, who arranged for all of our meetings with the staff, as well as took many pictures of us all in the hospital. She was incredibly nice, and the pictures she took of all of us were amazing. We talked with Anthony Maragu, who is in charge of the supply chain for the hospital, who told us a lot about the process of how Karen Hospital makes its decisions with regards to purchasing equipment and how it is used.

We also spoke with Madame Eunice Bett, the principal of the Karen Hospital Medical College, and Martin Mongai, the deputy principal, who discussed medical training at Karen, what the students learn, and gaps in their training which they are seeking to improve. They were all wonderful and very nice to us, we learned a lot from talking to all of them.

Almost everyone at the hospital knew us by now, and they were so nice and friendly.

After our talks, we observed another procedure by Dr Mayabi, and then we left and got dinner with Dr Matthew and Dr James. We went to a restaurant on the roof of a fancy hotel in Nairobi. We could not be seated at the roof because it was raining, but we still ate. I tried an Ostrich Steak for the first time, it was very sweet and tender, I liked it a lot. We talked for a long time, they are so wonderful, we learned a lot about them and had a lot of fun just talking. That was the end of our time at Karen Hospital for now, sadly, but we were ready to move on to more places and learn more!
